Frequently asked questions

Fit and size

How much growth room should I allow in kids’ shoes?

Recommended growth allowance for children’s shoes

For children, we recommend allowing about 1 to 1.5 cm of growth room in their shoes. This gives children’s feet enough space to walk comfortably, move freely, and grow healthily, without the shoes appearing too large. More information can be found in the product details for kids’ shoes.

Allowance in shoes for adults or fully grown children

For adults or fully grown children, we recommend allowing a maximum of 0.5 cm of extra space. The toes should not touch the front of the shoe, but there should also be no excessive room. This ensures the shoes remain comfortable, stable, and perfectly fitting.

How do I measure my child’s feet correctly?

Correctly measuring feet

Place a sheet of paper firmly against the wall and have your child stand on it with their heels touching the wall. Mark a line at the longest toe (this is not always the big toe) and measure the length to about 0.1 cm accuracy. Always use the larger foot as a reference and compare the measurement with our kids’ shoe size chart.

How do I read the size chart?

Make sure to use the size chart for standard-fitting shoes. For some models, the online shop may indicate “runs small”– in that case, choose one size up. If it says “runs large”, choose one size down.

On our size chart page, you will also find a helpful video showing how to measure your child’s feet accurately.

Do these kids sandals run large or small?

Information about the fit of these sandals (whether they run large, small, or true to size) can be found in the product details above. We recommend checking this information carefully to ensure you choose the correct size.

How often should I measure my child’s feet?

Measuring feet for babies

For small sizes, it is recommended to measure the feet every 3 months. Since young children often cannot accurately say whether their shoes are too small or too tight, it is important for parents to check this themselves.

Measuring feet for toddlers

From size 25 onward, feet grow a little slower. Usually, it is sufficient to measure the feet every 5 months to ensure a good fit and comfort.

Measuring feet for older children

As children grow, they can usually tell when shoes are too small or when their toes touch the front of the shoe. Still, it remains important to check foot size regularly to ensure a good fit and optimal comfort. In practice, measuring every 6 months is a good guideline.

Comfort and support

Do these kids’ shoes have a removable insole?

You can find out if these kids’ shoes have a removable insole in the product details above. Check the specifications for a “loose sole”, which indicates whether the insole can be removed.

Do these kids’ sandals provide enough support for feet and ankles?

Support in smaller sizes

Yes, these kids’ sandals generally provide sufficient support for feet and ankles up to approximately size 26, thanks to the closed heel with a stable heel counter (Contrefort).

Open heel in larger sizes

In larger sizes, the heel is often open, which reduces support. This is usually done for aesthetic reasons and because older children are generally already walking more independently and stably.

Practical use

Are these kids’ sandals suitable for daily use, for example at school?

Yes, these sandals are suitable for daily use at school.

Sustainable leather for kids’ sandals

This model is made from high-quality leather, which keeps the sandals stable, breathable, and comfortable, even when worn daily.

Support and fit of kids’ sandals

Sandals generally provide less support than closed shoes. However, for sizes up to around size 26, a closed heel with a sturdy contrefort provides sufficient stability. For larger sizes, the heel is often open, mainly for aesthetic reasons. Since older children walk more steadily, this is not a problem, although the support is still less than that of a closed shoe.

Quality from Junior Steps

Like all Junior Steps shoes, this model has been carefully selected for quality, support, and comfort. Therefore, these sandals are suitable for daily use, including at school.

Quality and maintenance

Are these kids’ shoes in patent leather easy to clean?

Cleaning and caring for kids’ patent leather shoes

Yes, kids’ shoes in patent leather can be cleaned with the right care. For stubborn stains and dirt, the shoes can be cleaned using the Shoeboy Multi Clean.

Refreshing and caring for kids’ patent leather shoes

To maintain patent leather, the Collonil Lack Mousse is ideal. It preserves the elasticity and shine of the leather, reducing the risk of cracks. Additionally, the mousse has an anti-static effect, helping the leather attract less dirt. Application is simple: apply and gently rub in.

Alternative: Collonil Lack Polish

The Collonil Lack Polish is another option. It reduces static, protects the material from dirt, and adds extra shine. Available in colorless and black, with the black version also useful for covering scuffed or worn areas.

Never impregnate patent leather kids’ shoes

Warning: kids’ patent leather shoes should never be treated with an impregnating spray, such as Collonil Carbon Pro Spray, as this can cause staining.
