What to do about sweaty feet in children? And how can you reduce it?

Sweaty feet in children… it’s something almost every parent will deal with at some point. You may notice damp socks, an unpleasant smell, or even minor skin irritation. The good news is that this is completely normal, and even better: there are very simple ways to deal with it.

Why do children get sweaty feet so easily?

Children naturally sweat more through their feet than adults. Their bodies are still developing and they are active throughout the day. When these active little feet are placed in closed shoes, heat and moisture build up quickly.

Sweating itself is not a problem. It only becomes an issue when moisture cannot escape, for example due to poorly breathable materials. This allows bacteria to grow more easily, leading to odour, irritation, or even blisters.

When should you take action?

A little sweating is normal, but it is important to recognize the signs early. If socks are wet or noticeably damp after wearing shoes, or if there is an unpleasant smell or sensitive skin, it is time to make changes.

Choose breathable shoes

The foundation almost always lies in the right footwear. Materials make a huge difference here. Genuine leather is ideal, as it allows the feet to breathe and naturally regulates moisture.

Synthetic materials, on the other hand, often trap heat and sweat. This is especially common in many sports shoes, which are often made from synthetic materials. While they are lightweight and practical, they usually allow less airflow, causing sweat to build up more easily.

In summer, open sandals are therefore a better choice, as they provide better ventilation and help keep feet dry.

Let feet breathe regularly

Besides good shoes, it is important to let feet “breathe” from time to time. At home, shoes can safely be taken off, and walking barefoot when appropriate is even better.

Fresh air helps moisture evaporate faster and prevents bacteria from building up.

Pay attention to socks

Socks may seem like a small detail, but they play a major role. It is best to choose natural materials such as cotton or wool, as they absorb moisture better and provide more comfort.

On warm days, it can also help to bring an extra pair of socks for changing when needed.

Change shoes regularly

If your child struggles with sweaty feet, this is one of the most important habits to adjust. Try to rotate shoes regularly so each pair has enough time to dry completely. Especially for children who sweat a lot, it is strongly recommended not to wear the same pair every day.

You can further improve drying by removing the insoles and leaving the shoes open. This allows moisture to escape more easily and keeps the shoes fresher.

However, make sure never to place shoes near a radiator or other heat source. Leather can dry out, become stiff, and even crack, which significantly shortens the lifespan of the shoe.

Good hygiene (without overdoing it)

Washing daily with lukewarm water and mild soap is more than enough. The most important step is to dry the feet thoroughly afterwards, especially between the toes.

Any remaining moisture can otherwise lead to additional problems.

The right fit makes all the difference

A shoe that is too small or too tight creates extra pressure and heat, causing feet to sweat more quickly. A good children’s shoe fits well but still leaves enough room for the toes.

The right fit not only reduces sweating but also improves comfort and supports healthy foot development.

In summary

Sweaty feet are usually not a hygiene issue, but rather the result of the right combination of shoes, materials, and fit. By choosing breathable materials, airing out feet regularly, and allowing shoes to dry properly, you can already make a big difference.

At Junior Steps, we therefore work almost exclusively with natural materials: around 95% of our shoes are fully made of leather, because it breathes best and is the most child-friendly option. We also offer a wide range of socks and tights in cotton and wool, ensuring that even the layer directly against the skin contributes to comfort and a healthy foot climate. Everything we do focuses on durable, natural materials that are ideal for growing children’s feet.

If you are still unsure about the right choice for your child, personalised advice is always valuable, because every child’s foot is different — and the right shoe truly makes all the difference.
